Established in 1926 along present-day Route 191, the Onawa Lodge was a premier 65-acre year-round resort marketed as the "Wide Awake Hotel in the Poconos". The property successfully blended the full-service luxuries of a fine hotel with the casual, open-air informality of country living by providing guests with a swimming pool, sports fields, bowling, and hayrides. It ceased operations as a traditional lodge in the late 1960s, briefly transitioning into a regional music, arts, and sports camp before the main structures were completely destroyed by a fire in the 1970s. Today, the historic grounds have been subdivided, and the footprint of the resort lives on primarily through the residential properties lining Onawa Court.
