Opened in 1954, the Fontainebleau Miami Beach was one of the grandest new resort hotels of the postwar era. Architect Morris Lapidus gave the oceanfront building its unmistakable sweeping curve, long bands of windows and theatrical modern styling. Photographed here shortly after opening, the gleaming white hotel and its palm-lined entrance capture the glamour and optimism that made 1950s Miami Beach an international vacation destination.
