Looking down the Avenue de l'Opéra from the steps of the Palais Garnier, the eye follows a canyon of matching stone façades into the distance. Tour coaches and a Volkswagen van move through the traffic, shop signs — Bata, Mitsukoshi, Crédit Lyonnais — lining the street. In the foreground, visitors rest at the foot of an ornate cast-iron lamp standard.
